In April 2024, Dubai suffered the most incredible thunderstorm that I have ever seen in my life. The Dubai floods were unbelievable.
I remember as a child being taught, that when you see lightning, you then count to 1,2,3,4,…… and then stop when you hear the thunder.
Well with this storm the lightning and thunder was constant, there was no gap in between. It was amazing to watch and listen but quite scary as well. The force of the rain was nothing like I had experienced before.

Record Dubai Rains
On the 16th April 2024 multiple storms converged on the UAE, apparently some as high as 15 km, from the Indian ocean and absolutely battered the country. Around 25 cm (10in) of rain fell on the city in a few hours.

The video below shows the incoming storm that a friend of mine recorded as she was driving. It looked like armageddon was about to hit in the form of a giant tidal wave!

After a few days, the water levels were beginning to drop and I was able to go and explore. The video below was in Al Barsha 1 where the roads were completely flooded. Many buildings (including mine) suffered power outages, so no water as well as the pumps failed.
Those companies with businesses on the ground floor suffered a huge amount of damage as water swept into their shops, clinics, restaurants and more. It was a very sad sight to see.

It was impossible to plan for such an amount of rain in that time frame, and the city was overwhelmed. However, the response from the government was amazing considering and I am sure a lot of lessons were learned to help plan for future such events.
The emergency services were brilliant and were out night and day rescuing people from trapped buildings and vehicles, saving many lives. Their level of professionalism and kindness was wonderful to see. In addition, communities around Dubai got together and helped each other stay alive, and find shelter, food and water; really the best of humanity was on show.
