Introduction to French Cuisine in Dubai

French food is legendary in terms of its quality, inventiveness and taste. It is a cuisine that I have always enjoyed and look forward to my next visit. When I came to Dubai nearly 20 years ago there was tiny choice of great French restaurants in Dubai, but that has changed dramatically over the years. The city now has a thriving range of French cuisine to suit everyone’s tastes.

Dubai, a city known for its architectural marvels and cultural diversity, has become a global hub for gastronomy. Among the myriad of culinary delights that Dubai offers, French cuisine stands out as a prominent player. In this article, we will explore the enchanting world of French restaurants in Dubai, where culinary artistry meets the opulence of the Middle East.

Signature Dishes You Can’t Miss

Indulge your palate with the signature dishes crafted by renowned French chefs in Dubai. From classic coq au vin to innovative culinary creations, these dishes showcase the mastery and creativity that define French cuisine.

But what are the most popular French dishes to try in Dubai? Here are 6.

Boeuf Bourguignon

Boeuf Bourguignon, a classic French dish originating from the Burgundy region, is a masterpiece of slow-cooked perfection. This hearty stew showcases tender chunks of beef marinated in red wine, complemented by an ensemble of aromatic herbs, vegetables, and the subtle smokiness of bacon.

Its unique taste comes from the slow cooking which allows time for the flavours to permeate through the dish. I list it first because it is my favourite dish from France.

Coq au Vin:

Coq au Vin, a quintessential French dish, is a culinary marvel that elevates poultry to new heights. Originating from the Burgundy region, this timeless classic features succulent chicken slow-cooked to perfection in red wine, accompanied by mushrooms, onions, and bacon. The dish is a celebration of contrasts—tender meat bathed in a robust wine reduction, imparting a deep, savoury flavour.

This is another favourite of mine, and once again the dish tastes amazing due to the slow cooking, and time for the flavours to embed themselves in the dish.

Ratatouille

Ratatouille, a vibrant and aromatic dish hailing from the sunny region of Provence, embodies the essence of Mediterranean simplicity. This vegetable medley is a visual feast, featuring layers of thinly sliced zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, and bell peppers, all harmoniously arranged and slow-cooked until tender. Perfumed with fragrant herbs like thyme and rosemary, Ratatouille captures the sun-soaked flavours of southern France. Very much a favourite regional dish in the farming communities in the country, and made even more famous by a certain movie.

Crêpes

Crepes, the thin and delicate French pancakes, are a culinary marvel that effortlessly balances simplicity and sophistication. Originating from the Brittany region of France, crepes have become a global sensation, celebrated for their versatility and delightful texture. Made from a simple batter of flour, eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt, crepes are cooked to perfection on a flat griddle, resulting in paper-thin rounds that are both tender and slightly crispy at the edges.

I love crepes and I might have lied earlier when I said that Beef Bourguignon was my favourite French dish. That and crepes battle it out constantly in my heart and stomach. Delicious!

Croque Monsieur

The Croque Monsieur, a classic French comfort food, is a culinary indulgence that transcends the ordinary ham and cheese sandwich. Hailing from the bustling cafes of Paris, this delectable creation features layers of thinly sliced ham and creamy Gruyere cheese sandwiched between slices of soft, crusty bread. What sets the Croque Monsieur apart is its transformation into a decadent delight through a generous slathering of béchamel sauce and a finishing touch of more cheese.

The ensemble is then toasted or baked until golden and bubbling, creating a crispy exterior that gives way to a gooey, flavorful interior. I admit I haven’t tried this one in Dubai yet but have if in France and in the UK. It is amazing and I would recommend trying it whether you find it in Dubai, or anywhere else for that matter.

Escargots Herb Butter Snails / Escargots de Bourgogne

Escargots de Bourgogne, a delicacy that may initially raise eyebrows, is an exquisite French dish that transforms humble land snails into a culinary masterpiece. Originating from the Burgundy region, this gastronomic delight involves cooking snails in a rich and flavorful concoction of garlic, parsley, shallots, and, most notably, copious amounts of butter.

The snails are often nestled back into their shells and generously coated with this herb-infused butter, creating a savoury symphony that captures the essence of French indulgence.

Now this dish I have not tried for many years, maybe 30+. It is available in Dubai and I should try it again. My French friends swear by it so one day I will sit with them and enjoy it. For those in the know, there are plenty of locations in Dubai to enjoy it.
